The Taal Volcano is an active caldera volcano found in the province of Batangas, Philippines. Its name is derived from a nearby lakeshore town with the same name. Research has shown that the said Volcano is pre-historic, and what remains today is simply a "sinkhole" formation that caved in from the supervolcano that it once was. It is one of the world's lowest volcanoes, being only 3 meters above sea level CITATION Taa \l 13321 (Taal Volcano, n.d.). It has a total of 47 craters within its vast and complex crater system. It also spews tons of basaltic-andesite in its deadly pyroclastic flow during its eruptions. Basaltic-andesite is a volcanic rock with a high silica content which can be found all around the world (Yamaya et al., 2013).
The Philippines is home to 24 out of the 400 active volcanoes around the world. It is also located in a region in Asia called the Ring of Fire, which is a large area in the Pacific Ocean where 90 percent of the world's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. The said Volcano is infamous in the Philippines as one of the most active volcanoes in the country. There are 23 active volcanoes in the country, several of which date back to the Holocene period.
The International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI) has named it one of its 16 Decade Volcanoes, which aims to encourage further studies and public awareness and help minimize the damages of the disruptive eruptions caused by these eruptions.
In more peaceful days, however, the small island within the Volcano lies is a "permanent danger zone" and is in fishing villages accessible to most tourists. However, many residents in the area and other fishing villages have existed there for years despite the government's warning: calling for extra precautionary measures around the area in case of other disturbances.
Its latest eruption was in January 2020, 43 years after its notorious eruption in 1977. The eruption was so strong that its main crater disappeared from the map, and a warning was issued for a possible volcanic tsunami. Furthermore, this killed thousands of livestock and caused tens of thousands of people from surrounding towns to flee—the eruption of immobilized movement within the province, as well as nearby regions. Even the nation's capital, Metro Manila, was not spared as the thick ashfall caused people to have breathing difficulties and made traveling impossible for a few days. Because of this, classes, work schedules, and flights in and out of the region were canceled for some time. Because some people chose to stay behind and guard their homes and livestock, 39 people died in this eruption.
