Capitalism has received its share of its support and opposition in equal measure. The former argue that it is the recipe for extraordinary growth while the latter argues that it is prone and further, creates an unrivaled level of inequality. This type of inequality is one that is experienced that is apparent in the uneven geographic development whereby some areas enjoy greater levels of development while others appear to lag. A sound mind will articulate that this position as unfair to some groups as it fails to improve their standards of living and in the worst circumstances, it ensures that part of population will languish below the poverty line. The relative discrepancies in economic developments have gained the traction of various experts as they endear to establish the metrics that underlie this position. Coe and his colleagues (2019) have discussed this topic expansively in their book; Economic Geography: A Contemporary Introduction. They have centered their discussion on two primal issues, which are environmental determinism as well as capitalism as a political economy. These two elements coupled with their associated dynamics and their degree of favorability have ensured that some different populations reap varying economic results. In a capitalistic society, nature’s provisions present in the environment as well as political inclinations facilitate the uneven geographic development that is quite evident when comparisons among several regions are made.
Environmental Determinism
When it comes to the uniqueness of a place and its impact economically, the environment is poised to possess exceptional human and physical resources including but not limited to landscapes, social life, and cultural practices. In this case, the natural resources take the greater share of this reasoning considering “the bounty of nature” that various regions are fortunate to own (Coe et al., 2019, p. 57). Still, the natural state of affairs could be bent on the growth that has begun somewhere at a certain point in time “and, under the right conditions, it will naturally spread” (p. 57). These aspects gain much recognition in the present debates.
Nature in itself provides a viable explanation to differing economic development. The most substantial point in case is the industrial revolution that happened in the United Kingdom. Northern England in particular was endowed with significant resources such as iron ore, coal, and water placing it as the pioneer of the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century. Similarly, nature has played a central role in the progressive developments that thrust the United States (U.S.), Sweden, Russia, Canada, and Australia considering that they have a tremendous bounty of the forest, agricultural, and mineral resources. This line of emerging thought is referred to as environmental determinism. Nevertheless, expanding this ideology brings to the fold the case for countries with immense natural resources, but have failed to exploit to advance their economic well-being.
