China’s implemented lockdowns have drastically reduced greenhouse production, energy consumption and improved overall air quality for the Spring season.During the Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan, the government was swift to implement a lockdown to contain the spread of the virus. With this, industrial activity has been greatly reduced, leading to a drastic decrease in greenhouse gas emissions such as CO2 (carbon dioxide) and NO2 (nitrogen dioxide) in the area. With most factories and public transportation not in use, the air became cleaner, which is evident in the clearer skies that were observed in that particular region.
The emergence of the Covid-19 led the World Health Organization to announce on March 11, 2020, that the situation has risen to global pandemic status. The governments were encouraged to take immediate steps to battle the spread of the virus. To slow down and lessen the transmission rate, many governments, such as China’s, implemented lockdowns in their cities. China’s Covid-19 restrictions on travel and mobility were strictly implemented and systematically monitored by the government. This saw an effective decrease of confirmed cases per day and was deemed as an effective step in slowing down and stopping the transmission of the virus. Restrictions in travel and a new approach to work productivity in the home meant that many modes of transport were shut down, and industrial and populated areas were put into a state of closure. Train stations and even highways were out of use as implemented in the lockdown policies designed to control the spread of the virus.
This meant that the population was using less electricity and oil-based energy resources such as coal and crude oil. Lesser cars and travel bans caused lesser air pollution and showed a significant decrease in carbon emissions up to about one metric ton.
