Servant Leadership in Non-profit Organizations Student’s Name Institution Servant Leadership in Non-profit Organizations Leadership is the pillar of success in non-profit organizations. The individual components may be good, but without good leadership, it is difficult to maximize productivity and employees are at risk of being marginalized. The nature of non-profit entities makes servant leadership the best leadership technique. Servant leadership is the concept of serving others (employees, clients, customers or the community) as a priority (William, 2017). It emphasizes on facilitating and helping employees grow and harness their maximum potential, empowering both individual team members and the organization to be successful. To be a servant leader, there are specific qualities that one must possess, such as having the mentality to serve. Their role is to support and address the needs of those who work under them. To better facilitate the work being done, servant leaders must think from the perspective of the employees, check in with them and be receptive to feedback. Even though there are constantly new models or seminars on better leadership, the most effective way is asking those being led on how their situations improved. The ideas of servant leadership have always been present, but Robert K. Greenleaf was the first person to use them in the modern era. According to Greenleaf servant leadership “begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first” (Greenleaf, 2019). Then, one chooses to “aspire to lead.” Servant leadership shows itself in how a leader cares for others and ensures that their needs are served. There are two responsibilities for leaders: “concern for tasks” and “concern for people.” Servant leaders focus more on people than tasks. The following are the leadership principles of servant leadership: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to growth and building community (William, 2017).
