Teratogens cause defects to embryos and fetus while retinoic acid has been suggested as one of the elements that is a teratogen. Deficiency to retinoic acid (RA) has been recognized to disrupt development, but overexposure may potentially cause malformation. Retinoic acid regulates embryonic development, whereby cells respond to retinoic acid when they have certain receptors when the concentration is within the appropriate range. Activating gene transcription is an important element in the regulation of embryonic development. Even though, RA is essential for growth and development, it cannot solely support the embryo gestation.
The mouse models can demonstrate the effect of the retinoic acid in the physiological development of kidneys. Overexposure to retinoic acid is a teratogen since there is a risk that this would create long lasting effects that result in retinoic acid deficiency.
