In this homework assignment, you will write about your life from your present age up to your death. Changes in your psychological health and well-being (personality, mental health, & cognition) are the focus of this assignment. The paper is not entirely fictional - it should draw upon the scientific literature that may be relevant to the trajectories you imagine for your future life.
If you have a psychological health condition and find it painful to write about the ways that will affect your life moving forward, please feel free to make up a fictional health trajectory (as long as the impacts you describe are grounded in research).
Please review the Sample Life Trajectory posted in Canvas to get an idea of how you should describe your own life trajectory.
Objective: You will describe your psychological trajectories from your current age (or younger) and describe how aspects of these trajectories change or remain stable across your adulthood.
Personality, mental health, and cognitive health are parts of our psychological trajectories. Describe the factors that we know impact personality, mental health and cognitive health.
Draw on material from the textbook to explain these factors.
How would you characterize your personality? Do you think your personality will be stable or do you think it will change? If the latter, how and why? How did your personality influence your choice of college, career or partner?
How will your mental health impact your life moving forward? Do you think your mental health will change or remain stable across your lifespan? Are there any mental health issues that you will gradually transform or you think may get worse with time?
How are your cognitive abilities? Does dementia run in your family? Do you have other risk factors that might affect the course of your cognitive functioning in late life (e.g., heavy alcohol use, diabetes, etc.)? Or do you have protective factors (e.g., education, cognitive complexity, emotional stability, etc.)? Are there specific things you plan to do to maintain good cognitive function as you age?
Find two scientific journal articles (1 journal article and 1 government website are acceptable) to help you understand and develop psychological trajectories that are grounded in research.
Use these articles, the life experiences of yourself and others, and your imagination to describe your various psychological trajectories.

Although different events and circumstances in life could affect one’s fate, I believe that I would be able to achieve my dream of becoming a Lawyer and Psychologist one day. By 26, I would have been able to complete my Ph.D. in Social-Organizational Psychology at Columbia University in New York. However, the journey would not be as easy as it is since taking up a Doctorate requires a lot of time, resources, and effort to succeed. Accordingly, this could cause me to resort to different coping mechanisms which include task, emotion, and avoidance-oriented practices (Endler, 2002). Nevertheless, avoidance-oriented practices are surely my last resort especially considering that I am eagerly determined to complete my studies.
After completing my Ph.D., I would have started working in a corporation to practice my field. Since this career would entail a lot of interactions with employees, managers, and other people in the workplace, then my extroverted tendencies would most likely be developed especially since it is a desirable trait that would make my job easier. However, since my personality has always been inclined towards being an introvert, there might be times when I would be tired of dealing with a lot of people and choose to seclude myself from others from time to time.
After practicing my career in social-organization psychology after two years, I would then pursue my other dream of being a corporate lawyer. Entering Penn Law at the age of 28 would not be an easy task especially considering that mental capacity starts to decline at the age of 27 (Khan, 2009). Thus, it would take me a long time to memorize laws, analyze jurisprudence, and organize my arguments as compared to my classmates who are younger than me. To compensate for this, I would be revising my study techniques by relying on auditory methods (i.e., recording) since I have always been an auditory learner.
By 32 I would have finished my Law degree and would start to take the bar in New York. Since the practice of law is a little different from my acquired research and experimental skills in psychology, I would have to get used to utilizing the two together to further my career in the corporate world. However, the stress of trying to set up my law firm could lead me to become less social and make it difficult to find a partner that is suitable to my own conscientious and neurotic personality.
By 34, however, I would be married to a girl from New York City. Since building a family is much better in a quiet and serene place, we would be moving from living near the bustling streets of Manhattan to the suburbs such as Larchmont or Scarsdale. It would take a while for me to adjust to the changes in travel time, schedule, and lifestyle which could lead me to resort to alcoholism as a coping mechanism (Swatt, Gibson, & Piquero, 2007). As I and my wife starts to build our own family, the stress builds up leading to more frequent flights. At times, the fights would even boil down to the very trivial matters such as washing the dishes or picking up the mail. As for myself, this would be due to my increasing agitation brought about by an early onset of depression.
