Our sensory experiences shape our understanding of the world around us. Our brain receives and processes information from various sensory receptors, such as the eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and skin. Each of these senses provides us with unique information about our surroundings, and our previous experiences, expectations, and context influence our perception of sensations. The author will focus on these senses in this article, specifically how the external environment affects a person's senses.
Sense of Sight and Other Senses
Sight is arguably the most significant sense regarding the information it provides us about the world. Our eyes detect light waves and convert them into neural signals that our brain interprets as visual information (Bradford & Harvey, 2023). The sensory information we receive from our eyes influences our perception of color, brightness, shape, and size. However, external factors such as lighting, shadows, and even the angle from which we view the object can alter our perception of visual stimuli.
Similarly, our perception of taste can also be influenced by external factors such as texture, temperature, and even the appearance of the food. Our tongue contains sensory receptors that detect five tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and umami (Bradford & Harvey, 2023). However, our perception of taste is also influenced by our olfactory senses, which detect the aroma of our food. For example, if we eat food with a strong odor, it can overpower the actual taste of the food and change our perception of its flavor.
As mentioned earlier, our sense of smell is closely linked to our sense of taste (Stre & Stre, n.d.). Our olfactory system detects and processes information about odors in the environment. This sense is strongly connected to our emotional and memory centers, so that certain smells can evoke strong emotions or memories.
