Keeling Curve
Named after the person that established the curve, Charles David Keeling, the Keeling curve, is a graph that is used to plot the concentration of the carbon dioxide gas in the earth’s atmosphere. Keeling started the project in the year 1953 around Pasadena, California. Later on he expanded the project to Big Sur which is near Monterey in California, Olympic peninsula which is in Washington and the mountain of Arizona. At the time he was the leading authority at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, when he established the global atmospheric record for carbon dioxide (American Chemical Society, 2018).
In the year 1958, Keeling started measuring carbon dioxide concentration at the Hawaii’s Mauna Loa Observatory. He applied rigorous analytical procedures and reveled some of the new trends that were associated with man-made and natural causes of the carbon dioxide increase in the earth’s atmosphere. It is through this research that Keeling was able to form one of the most important linkages between fossil fuels combustion and their impact on the global climatic changes, relative to the greenhouse effect (American Chemical Society, 2018). This is a research that forms the cornerstone of today’s climatic changes interventions. One of the most...
