1 What is the difference between dominant and recessive genes?
Dominant genes are the genes where traits are expressed, giving rise to a phenotype, independently of the other copy or gene. For instance, the gene responsible for the yellow color of the seeds is dominant, and the one linked to the green color, recessive. Thus, if the seed color gene has one copy for each color, the plant will always have yellow seeds since it is a dominant allele. Recessive genes are genes where traits are being expressed in the phenotype only if that same allele is present on both chromosomes of a homologous pair.
2 What is the difference between a heterozygous and homozygous expression of genes?
A homozygous gene relates to two chromosomes of a homologous pair that have the same allele of a specific gene. In homozygous expression of genes there are genes with identical alleles (versions) of chromosomes are inherited from both parents(Marieb & Smith, 2016). When there are two different alleles for the same gene, then this is heterozygous. Since in heterozygous expression of genes, the alleles are different then there are different versions of the genes.
