RE: Protect Students From Exposure to Lead in School Drinking Water
1.0 Introduction
There is a legal obligation to understand the level of contaminants in drinking water to ensure that consumers are protected from adverse health impacts. Lead is one of the most poisonous metals when consumed by humans. Therefore, it is vital to understand the lead levels in water and ensure that children are protected from lead-contaminated water. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), safe drinking water should have zero lead content. This is because lead is toxic and dangerous to human health, even when consumed at low levels. Another aspect is that lead usually accumulates in the body and leads to adverse health outcomes over time (EPA, n.d.). Therefore, understanding the levels and related impacts is essential to protect students from harmful drinking water.
2.0 Process of Lead Getting Into Water and Prevention Measures
Lead gets into drinking water when there are chemical reactions in the plumbing system designed with lead. The process is usually called corrosion, and lead atoms or molecules are dissolved into the drinking water. Notably, the reactions are more aggressive when the water has high acidity or minimal mineral content. The amount of lead that would enter the water depends on its acidity or alkalinity, the mineral content of the water, the amount of lead contacted by the water, the level of water temperature, and the period water stays in the plumbing system (CDC, 2020). These are preventable methods that can reduce the occurrence of lead in drinking water within the school. In order to prevent led from getting into the water, the pipes can be fitted with protective scales and coats to prevent any chemical processes. Moreover, it is vital to maintain a neutral pH of the water to prevent corrosion of plumbing materials designed with lead. This will reduce the amount of lead getting into the water...
