Physiological drought refers to the state in which plants lose their leaves during the winter periods. In such cases, the plants are unable to appropriately absorb water in the earth’s surface due to its change in state caused by freezing temperatures. Consequently, physiological drought may lead to a reduction in growth and photosynthesis levels in the plants. The physiological impact on plants produced by this type of drought affects them since photosynthesis levels significantly reduce, leading to lower moisture absorption. Broadleaf forests in the Eastern United States thus lose their leaves seasonally at such instances to maintain water moisture in the plant in wait for the frozen water to thaw during spring (Grodek, 2020).
