The Salmon War, otherwise known as the Klamath War, possibly named after the Salmon fish from Klamath river in northern California, was a counter-protest Civil War between the native American tribes Yurok and the government agencies inclusive of the federal police and the United State Fish and Wildlife Service (UFWS) in the decade 1970s (KCET, 2016). Other tribes affected by the crisis include the Karuk and the Hupa who coexisted with the Yurok in the hills and valleys of the Klamath River. The Native Americans argued that fishing was their major source of life, from sustenance, economic and spiritual right and therefore, none other jurisdiction had the authority to bar them from carrying out the activity. Besides, the tribes claimed that they belonged to the river since they had lived and will continue to live there.
The Yurok tribes of northern California were arguably the most spiritual in history despite being fearful. The strong spirituality worked to some extent to fight the war against the feds and other government agencies as it was narrated that they could sing songs of praise to scare them away. A more radical approach to fight against the Salmon War would be a negation between the Indian tribes and the several government agencies to try and find an amicable coexistence while preserving the natural environment. An alternative would be a peaceful protest against the abusive nature of the government agencies and a demand for their rights. As observed from the protest by Greta Thunberg (Washington Post, 2020), protests are one of the most effective ways of pushing for a change.
