Waves occur at the interface between the oceanic water layers when there is movement or disturbance by an external force like wind for the wind-generated waves the surface tension and gravity helps maintain the waves. When the winds are strong, so are the waves, and the energy causing the waves to form is the disturbing force. For instance, a storm surge and sudden change in atmospheric pressure are disturbing forces. The tsunamis, which are sudden displacements of water and at other times the waves are generated by, rocking of water in enclosed spaces (seiches), gravitational attraction (tides) landslides, seismic and volcanic activities and other direct water displacements (Horrigan & Mustart, 2009). When the waves move through the water deeper than the wavelength they are deep-water waves, and those moving when shallower than the original wavelength are shallow-water waves.
