Coastlines. History of Antrim Coastline. Life Sciences Essay

Essay Instructions:

The coastlines of the world are constantly being impacted by waves, currents, and storms. Choose your favorite coastline (or least favorite) and describe how it is affected by those factors. The section of coastline you select should be less than 100 miles in length. In your essay, discuss how your coastline changed over time, through erosion and deposition. Consider including air photos, satellite images, and/or maps to show the historic changes to the coastline. What features are found along it? Ones you might mention include but are not limited to barrier islands, headlands, bays, caves, arches, sea stacks, cliffs, and wave-cut platforms. Finally, consider the future of your coastline. How might it change as sea level rises due to global climate change, and how might waves, currents, and storms contribute to those changes?

Coastlines
The Antrim Coastline in Northern Ireland is approximately 15 miles in length. The coastline was named after the eleventh Antrim Earl, who was living in Antrim's North Ireland. His love for the coastline was intense, and he suggested to be buried on the coastline's hilltop. Fletcher (2017) explains that the Antrim Coastline is among the most beautiful and less spoiled coastlines in the world. For instance, the coastline has a fantastic history, pristine beaches, small fishing villages, sheer cliffs, and remote glens. Figure 1 and Figure 2 both show the history and the giant causeway of the Antrim coastline, respectively.

The coastline stretches from Lane to Bally-castle and comprises of a broad range of diverse marine life and habitats. The broad diversity is determined by a wide range of numerous factors that include salinity, tidal ranges, currents, water depth, and geology ("Antrim Coastline named among best in the world," 2020). The offshore seabed geology is similar to the land's geology. The geology has old sedimentary rocks overlaid by tertiary basalts. Some places of Antrim Coastline, such as Rathlin has sea caves created by eroded limestone. Around the Glens and Antrim Coast, the water is relatively shallow. However, there is a deep trench that reaches a depth of more than 200 meters in the northern part of Rathlin Island. The region has a low tidal range that averages less than 2 meters. Besides, the Red bay area has the lowest tidal ranges.
The underwater character of the Antrim Coastline from fine mud, sand, and bedrock is determined by the exposure to waves and weather and current variations. Some areas, such as Maidens, Torr's head, and Rathlin, have strong currents (Causeway Coast, 2020). The coas...
