Communication is central to successful battlespace and non-engagement activities. Of particular importance is oral communication. Typically, commanders and subordinates need to communicate different information for different purposes, urgent or routine. The US Marine Corps has a long established history, I have come to learn, of effective oral communication among and across different units. If anything, military briefings, so common among Marine Corps, are a standard communication method (and channel) to share a variety of day-to-day and strategic activities. If oral communication is consistently shown to be critical to align a sender, receiver and a message, military briefings, usually delivered in formalized settings, must, I have come to understand, be clear, succinct and specific. There are, generally, four types of military briefings: (i) Information, (ii) Decision, (iii) Mission and (iv) Staff. Moreover, a confirmation briefing, not so much a separate type of briefing yet a combination of a decision briefing and an information briefing, aims to ensure alignment of efforts in a given mission by identifying, say, gaps in planning and means subordinates follow to accomplish a given mission (US Marine Corps, 2016). The process of developing a briefing, of any kind, is pretty much straightforward and involves phases of: (i) Planning, (ii) Preparing and (iii) Delivering. In a nutshell, “Planning” phase is about identifying a proper subject, determining purpose, determining a central idea and, critically, analyzing audience.
