Hurricane Ike was experienced in parts of Northern America and the Great Antilles in 2008 and it is the greatest storm ever experienced. It destroyed agricultural farms, infrastructure and many more especially in Cuba and Texas and is also referred to as an extra tropical storm to ever be experienced. The storm left over a hundred people dead and several others were missing. Impacts of Ike in America were severe as major oil depots and pharmaceutical areas were as result prices in gasoline and natural oil increased. Cuba lost 7 people and many structures fell from the passing storm.
Exactly after five years, Hurricane Isaac was experienced as the ninth storm with a name. It hit Louisiana State through its shows in August 2012. Due to the established pre-existing collaborative nature locally, the resources were mobilized smoothly due to the integrated command structure. People in the affected areas were managed and mobilized properly in terms of supplies and strategies of eradicating them. The existing collaborative networks were integrated and assisted in responding to the disaster. Ike’s aftermath made it necessary for different programs used in coordinating response to any subsequent disaster. Lessons learnt from Hurricane Ike, were used in planning by many organizations, in readiness and any response activities.
Outdated policies at the national level are affecting leadership at all levels from national to locals during hurricanes (Dyson, 2006). Leaders must check on outdated policies and create new effective and efficient policies. Organization at regional levels should be synchronized so that effective response is delivered. This challenge is a great threat to leaders especially those who use the bottom-up approach.
Handling criticism from the public negatively on how they perform on crisis management. Leaders tend to blame other actors for the failures of their actions. Blaming others offers a ray of sunshine from criticism (Ellis, 1994). For instance, the leaders of Texas blamed the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The agency was accused of collecting debris after events have occurred. There are complaints about people asking for a place to stay only to be given hotel vouchers while others have sewers that have not been made in their homes.
