Reasons Why Marijuana Should be Legalized (Essay Sample)

Instructions:
TOPIC: LEGALIZING MARIJUANA Identify variables in your research on legalizing marijuana and provide examples; identify them as being independent, dependent, discrete, or continuous. Explain how you came to your conclusions and thoroughly explain how you expect that each variable will affect the outcome of your project. I have these already from another writer, but I need 2 more pages, other than what is listed below. Legalization of Marijuana is closely tied to many variables, some of which are logical and others ambiguous. The number reason for pushing for legalization of marijuana is to increase the revenue from tax. This was the basis of marijuana legalization in California (Gerdes 2002). The criminal aspect of this legalization aimed at reducing the number of individuals arrested with possession or abuse of marijuana. The ideology behind this is the reduction of unnecessary cost incurred by the government in arresting, medical testing and charging of suspects of marijuana. This will enable the resources of criminal justice to be channeled to other important issues. This extends to the cost incurred by the individuals in payments of bonds and fines. Such individuals will be relieved from punishment and stigma associated with criminal sentences (Gerdes 2002). Another school of thought indicates that corruption and violence which are major vices of illicit drugs like marijuana will be reduced. It is construed that by legalizing marijuana, black market activities involved with the drug will be eliminated and therefore hurt that results from such dealing will be overcome. Arguably, by legalizing marijuana, it will be easier to control its access by underage persons especially the youth. This is logical for in a regulated market the consumers of marijuana can be identified by their age. Some of the ambiguous consideration includes the product quality whereby it is seen that the quality of Marijuana will improve by legalizing. Also arguing that legalizations will diversify the intoxicants available in the market doesn't make sense. source..

Medical Value of Cannabis Sativa: Contrary to many other drugs that may not even be illegalized such as cigarettes, and alcohol, many benefits may be derived from marijuana plant. One of this significance is its medicinal purposes. Medical Cannabis is the use of cannabis plant as a herbal therapy or antiemetic. I do not understand why the government should outlaw the drug yet it has been used for medical and health purposes since time immemorial. In fact, early writings from ancient India indicate the psychoactive properties found in cannabis. Countries which have realized the medical significance of this substance such as Canada and Australian have legalized it to be used for treating patients. In Canada, patients are now allowed to possess the substance while some famers are licensed to cultivate it in small or large scale. In Australia, politicians voted to allow doctors use the substance where they deemed appropriate (Cravatt et al, 2004).
Studies have identified a group of endo-cannabinoids responsible for activating cannabinoid receptors (Bisogno, 2005). These and many other discoveries in the chemicals in cannabis plant have resulted into the emergency of various CB receptor protagonists and antagonists and the studies which have confirmed the therapeutic potential for cannabis plant. Six studies that were sponsored by U.S back in 1980s found out that smoking bhang reduced pain, nauses, and glaucoma. Fratello (2013) observes that many patients, their families and doctors have witnessed the medical benefits accrued from cannabis. A lot more doctors, patients and researchers have testified and contributed to journals and b...
