Interrogation also referred to as questioning is mostly used by the military personnel, law enforcement officers, and intelligence agencies with the aim of getting useful information from a person. Interrogation has been employed in the US since time in memorial especially during the world war and during the cold war so to get critical information about their enemies. Most of the techniques used in the past were harsh and even led to the death of the victims. One of the techniques that were mostly deployed by the CIA was the waterboarding technique. This technique dates back to the 16th century during the Italian Inquisition. In this method, the victim was bound and gagged then water was poured over a person in a manner that one would think that he/she was about to drown. It was commonly referred to as torture. Torture relates to the intentional affliction of severe mental pain or suffering as per the federal criminal code. History shows that torture extends to over more than two millenniums ago in Europe. It was first recognized in 3rd century AD in the Roman Empire under jurist Ulpian, who believed that there were no effect means of obtaining information out of a person had the strength to resist while others who are unable to withstand pain will tell lies (WILSON ANDREWS, 2014). In past various law enforcement agencies and intelligence, bodies used contentious techniques such as sleep deprivation and waterboarding to coerce vital information from people. However such kind of techniques are gradually be outlawed and if found using these techniques one could be jailed. A good example is in the American-Italian war back in 1901 where an army major was jailed to 10 years of hard labor for using the waterboarding technique on an insurgent in the Philippines (McCoy, 2007). The current law amendments that advocate for abolishing of contentious interrogation techniques such as waterboarding wants to ensure that the government adheres to the laws of war even though it has to fight against belligerents who do not respect the laws of war,
Currently, the techniques that are used are ones that do not result in physical harm to victims under interrogation. Nowadays suspects are taken into an interrogation room and questioned without inflicting any physical pain. Deception is one of the current techniques that are commonly used in interrogation. Deception widely used because the law does not inhibit the interrogators from lying about the strength of their case, from making misleading judgments like the interviewee has been implicated by someone else in the crime so as to trick the victim or from cornering the suspect to give more information.
