A significant tension exists between the business’s need to maximize profit and the consumers’ need to receive truthful, non-misleading, and complete information about the products they consume. Maximizing business profits means using the cheapest and most affordable production methods and raw materials available. This may include non-environmental-friendly materials like plastics (Noyes, 2022). These companies may decide to promote their products through consumer-accepted means like environmental friendliness, amounting to lies and potential harm to the public and the environment. This amounts to greenwashing. On the other hand, the public is willing to consume and endorse products that uphold integrity, truthfulness, and value their customers. Therefore, businesses try hard to please their customers while the public weighs the many competing companies and picks the one that best serves their interest.
