In recent years, the criminal justice field has been largely untouched by the wave of organizational change initiatives that have swept through other sectors, like healthcare and education. Consequently, many agencies are still functioning under inefficient command model structures with outdated processes developed decades ago (Phillips, Westaby, Fowler & Waters, 2020). This paper will examine the forces behind change in criminal justice agencies and the various observable changes in organizational cultures.
There has been an increased interest in social and political behavior influencing change in criminal justice agencies. There is more focus on understanding these changes and how social norms can change the way people behave when they commit a crime. The current political environment that the United States is in focuses on security issues, which has given way to new policies on how the criminal justice system operates. Crime and terrorism are two different issues that have to be dealt with very differently by law enforcement, specifically the FBI. The FBI has started looking at how these different crimes are connected. It is important to understand what is taking place in the world of politics before changes can be made by criminal justice officials. The changes in organizational behavior also play a major role in influencing criminal justice agencies. Organizational behavior has been studied for many years now, but it has only recently been incorporated into the criminal justice field due to the changes taking place. Organizational behavior is a field that focuses on how people interact with other people and how they make decisions and efficiently use resources. It is important to understand organizational behavior as a tool when making changes to criminal justice agencies. Various methods of organizing police departments have been tried to facilitate change in the criminal justice agencies.
The key relationship between organizational behavior and organizational systems is that behavior affects subsequent organizational structures, and structures affect subsequent behavior. It is necessary to examine the effects of organizational socialization, the development of self-concept, and the strategies used by organizations to maximize their effectiveness. Examining the characteristics of leadership attributes that affect organization performance will reveal how leaders can structure organizations to better serve their members' interests. Organizational socialization, self-concept, and the key attributes of leadership are major determinants of effectiveness in organizations.
