History of Democracy
The history of democracy can be traced back to Athens in 5th and 6th century BC when the people exercised direct democracy. Athenians (only free men born and raised in Athens) were eligible to speak and vote in the Assembly which legislated laws for the city-state CITATION Mar181 \l 1033 (Cartwright, 2018). The dark ages never had much to be considered democracy. In medieval England, the barons of England wrote the ‘Magna Carta’ because they were unhappy the king was abusing his power and increasing taxesCITATION Ber15 \l 1033 (Berg, 2015). The Magna Carta gave rights and freedom to the people to access courts for fair trial. Magna Carta went on to become a very important foundation for British laws and it became the basis of many constitutions across the world. The American revolution which birthed the United States reengineered democracy based on freedom and equality and it has since been adopted in many countries and tailored for themselves.
Types of democracies and examples
Liberal/Constitutional Democracy: (most democracies the world over) France, US, Britain, Canada, South Africa etc.
Representative Democracy: (most democracies the world over) the US, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Switzerland, Italy, Kenya, India
Direct Democracy: Switzerland uses this form of democracy to a large degree.
Theocratic Democracy: Iran
Federal Democracy: USA, Germany, Brazil etc
Unitary Democracy: the UK, France, Netherlands, Ireland…
Illiberal Democracy: German Empire during the ‘2nd Reich’ between 1870–1918
Communism: China
