Ethics are the moral codes that influence a person's behavior and actions. Therefore, ethical leadership is a concept whereby individuals are guided by specific principles identified by the majority as drivers for morality (Den Hartog, 2015). These principles include trustworthiness, respect, justness, and transparency. In criminal justice, ethical leaders, such as the police, are vested with the mandate to implement law and order. The constitution guides their actions by considering both internal and external factors. To ensure that ethical standards are maintained, the law enforcement officers need to educate the community and the news media and follow the administrative mechanisms designed to impact the operations of the police department. They are also supposed to promote socialization and provide guidance through positive and negative reinforcement (Gonzales et al., 2005).
Today, the perception of ethical leaders is based on their relationship with people. Therefore, these professionals ought to have programs that will communicate their expectations to the community and allow them to get feedback on what individuals expect from them. The programs will facilitate interactive communication between ethical leaders and societal members. This is in addition to helping reduce misconduct among themselves. Community involvement allows ethical leaders to consider the community's culture to build trust. This attribute will reduce conflict between the officers and societal members (Jacocks & Bowman, 2022).
Administrative mechanism puts into consideration values that adhere to departmental policies. Police officers use this mechanism to manage community conflict. This is because it follows the procedures, rules, and regulations tied to the reviews and internal audits that limit them from being unethical.
