Court Project: Different Kinds of In-Court Matters

Essay Instructions:

I have assembled the 10 link-attached videos with this email They run about 2 hours in total. I have carefully selected the videos to represent a wide range of in-court matters, including contempt of court, bad rulings by judges, an uncooperative defendant on cross-examination, issues related to a non-defendant police officer taking the Fifth, a comparison of the federal and state legal system, a scolding of a county social services department and delineation between negligence (tort) and criminal acts (intent through reckless and wanton behavior).
As with the above-mentioned typical court project, with this alternative project protocol, I am asking for your reflections of what you see in at least five of the videos. We do not need a form for your submission, just write a one-page response heading the page with “Court Project”. This response will be due via email (using “Court Project” on the subject line of the email) and will be due on the class period prior to the last day of class. PLEASE DO NOT submit earlier.

In this writing give some thought as to what the video was about –
what was the focus of the video? Other considerations might be the importance of the video as to the parties involved, what were the legal concerns, and ESPECIALLY what are your own reflections as to what happened in the video? There are no right or wrong answers. I just would like you to spend some time thinking about the legal system. Most of these videos are in-court tapes, showing life in the courtroom as it is – not as presented by actors or “Judge Judy”. Are these courts functioning as they should or not? Please indicate the video to which you are responding for each set of your comments.
As I should not and cannot evaluate your opinions and reflections, I cannot assign an assessment based on such. I can, however, base evaluation on perceived effort. I am asking of you for a minimum of one page (47 lines using 12 point font) of written reflection to 5 videos (one page for all, not each).

Judge Fights for Career After Altercation with Public Defender
After watching this video, I could agree that the judge acted out of emotional and stressful thoughts triggered by events outside the courtroom. Based on the raw footage of the video from the courtroom, it is clear that the judge had not had a long verbal altercation to warrant his hostile behavior. Nonetheless, one cannot excuse his behavior during this particular episode. Officers of the court should conduct themselves with the highest decorum.
District Attorney Scolded by Judge for Tweeting During Aurora Shooting Trial
I have always thought that using your mobile while meeting or gathering is insulting. Hence, when watching this video, I could not help feeling disappointed. As mentioned, an officer of the court should conduct themselves with the highest decorum. No matter how boring the court proceedings are, the advocate must...
