With the development of technology, organizations and employees have leveraged this opportunity by creating various social media platforms. However, social media has made various employees expose their employment status online and, to some extent, reveal confidential information about an organization (Abbas & Ashiq, 2020). It is important to note that some companies regard this as an unethical issue; some end up firing or punishing employees for online posts to some extent. Turiel (2006) notes that this is a complicated issue since these employees might be expressing themselves, but at the same time, their actions show they are disloyal to their employers. For instance, if an employee post on Facebook complaining about work is not punishable, but if such an action will make the business lose customers, then the employer has the right to punish the employee (Dangi et al ., 2020).
Xx notes that business owners should implement social media policies to avoid risks like the firing of employees or the risk of ambiguity. Li et al. (2020) describe a Yelp employee who went on social media to talk about the awful working conditions of the online review company she was working for. However, Yelp fired the employee claiming that the worker had violated the company policies. However, the big question was if her post was malicious, justifiable or if it showed the employee was disloyal to the organization. Such issues show why any company must implement clear media policies.

Ethical theories are important because they take what is considered proper and wrong in an organization or society in general (Bereskin, Campbell & Kedia, 2020). This is the same as the law, which defines right and wrong. Two theories that can be used to analyze this ethical misuse are egoism and utilitarianism. According to King (2008), egoism state that people who whistle-blow are interested in pursuing their interest. However, psychology asserts that people are egoists because they act based on their interests. However, professionally this is bad because one has to consider the interest of other people.
