Death in Modern Greece Culture
Since ancient times, Greeks have believed that at the time of death, the spirit of the deceased leaves the body and joins after-life on earth. Then, based on the backgrounds and customs of the subculture, the body is prepared for cremation or burial (Pentaris, 2012). Despite the general meaning of death, every culture identifies the experience of it plus the mourning process as well as reacts to it in unique ways. Fear of death in Modern Greek culture is aggravated by cultural heritages and myths (Pentaris, 2012). Death is seen as pain or psychological and emotional disaster. Today, Greeks seem to avoid death discussions, unless they are discussing the death of someone that no one knows in the household. Discussion of death, particularly of one's own demise in his or her household is an omen that evil will shortly enter their home.
In today's Greece culture, fear of death is dominant while the readiness to overcome those emotions is not. They fear death because of the grieving period the people left behind go through. The Greek culture represents various customs and beliefs that stem from the Christian Orthodox church (Pentaris, 2012). After the death of someone, they open all windows to all evil spirits to be taken out by fresh air.
