Role of Parties
Political parties are very influential, especially in determining the decisions made during American elections and in government. Political parties such as Republicans and Democrats are very important since they decide the individual selected to take roles in government offices. In most instances, the Democrats or Republicans often seek to ensure that their members comprise the majority of the individuals who run government offices. Political parties often influence the electorate to support them based on what they recommend (Chapter 7). For instance, the Republic party arose since it did not support the expansion of slavery throughout America. In this regard, the Republic party was influential in encouraging people to support their views in the West and Northwest of America. Any person who did not support the expansion of slavery could easily align with the party and vote for it to ensure that its policy positions are implemented into law.
Political parties have a role during elections since they are responsible for recruiting the candidates who run for office. For instance, during the previous elections, the Republicans were responsible for picking the presidential nominee who would run in the polls, in this case, Donald Trump. Furthermore, the parties also have a role in mobilizing the electorate to support a specific legislative agenda, such as immigration. The actions or decisions by the political parties directly affect American citizens. Each political party has its ideology, which also means that its supporters also have to consider them (Chapter 7). For example, if the Republicans support tougher and strict border control laws, then the American citizen who supports the Republicans will also have to support the party’s position. This is why the party’s voters are crucial since they will ensure that a particular political party gets the seat.
