Political Socialization
Political socialization is the process through which individuals develop their political perspective based on the environment they grew up in and the people they interacted with throughout their lives. Parents, school, peers, media, and voluntary associations are the five major agents of political socialization (Quintelier, 53). Parents are likely to influence an individual’s political ideologies by a significant percentage as one grows up learning the political views of parents and elder siblings. The ideologies within the family regarding politics are likely to shape up an individual’s political philosophies. Only about 15-20% of individuals are likely to rebel and go contrary to their parents’ ideologies. This is also the case with the other major agents of political socialization.
The voluntary associations of an individual incorporate the environment one grows up in and their individual experiences among people throughout their lives. These also mold the views of an individual concerning politics. Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton had exposure to the agents of political socialization differently. They grew up in different states, different socioeconomic status, went to different schools, and among different peers. This helped them develop their different political ideologies.
Donald Trump was politically socialized by his parents, education as well as his voluntary associations. Trump’s parents were strong Republicans, in a way that affected his political ideologies as Republican to date. Trump’s education also played a significant role in his political socialization.
