2. Communication is a key component of effective incident response. Some channels of communication may be compromised, and some people check things like email at different intervals - particularly during off hours. How should communication be handled during an incident response? How widely should communication be dispersed?
Mistakes in communication during an incident response can cause severe damage to the organization. According to Thompson (2018), careful consideration is necessary before notifying the stakeholders affected by the incident. The messages sent should not only be accurate and timely, but they should also target the right stakeholders. Furthermore, Steinke et al. (2015) point out that communication briefings done before responding to an incident can be instrumental in the performance of the response team. The authors point out that such briefings reduce communication breakdown since the response team members have a shared expectation in regards to the information that should be given. Furthermore, they enhance cohesion and coordination. Incident response team should thus hold communication briefing before responding to an incident. It is important that the organization shares information with external stakeholders such as the media, law enforcement, as well as forensic investigation team (Thompson, 2018). The information to these stakeholders needs to be accurate and be shared promptly to avoid damage to the organization.
