Since the independence of America, there has been a consistent agitation for the observance of civil rights. Successive regimes have over the years been put to task by civil rights activists to guarantee equal opportunities and protection to all citizens regardless of their background. There exists a strong co-relation between civil rights and rationalism. Rationalists believe that God is rational and created man to be the same (Martin, 2006). They also contend that reason must be implemented in the pursuit of a habitable world. In light of this, rationalism has had a huge impact on both the government and society as far as civil rights are concerned.
Civil rights activists are, to some, extent rationalists in the sense that they believe in the unconstrained use of reason in the pursuit of truth leading to a much better world. In this context, truth refers to the rights that every human being must freely enjoy. Just as important, rationalists believe that no authority or religion should limit the exercise of reason in the pursuance of these rights (Martin, 2006). Therefore, the concept has impacted heavily on civil rights activists. They are convinced that the government and society must be reasonable and rational in ensuring that all people are treated equally and fairly. They contend that it is entirely incumbent upon human beings to create and nurture a robust and agreeable environment by upholding human rights. They argue, for example, that man cannot wait upon God to stop discrimination; that is purely the prerogative of man. In this regard, people must embrace rational perception to decide what is good to be done or wrong to be shunned (Siegel, 2017). According to rationalists, people should use their inherent goodness and cognitive abilities to promote human rights.
