Thoreau's Definition Of "Civil Disobedience."
In 1846, Henry David Thoreau was arrested and jailed for tax delinquency. As a result, he wrote an essay, "Resistance to Civil Government, " published in 1949. The essay is famously known as "Civil Disobedience" since the simple act of defiance prompted the essay writing. According to Thoreau, in the essay, "Under a government which imprisons any unjustly…the true place for a just man is also a prison"CITATION Tho49 \l 1033 (Thoreau, 1849). Therefore, Civil Disobedience, according to Thoreau, refers to the aspect that it is acceptable for citizens to break the law on some occasions if the law may interfere with harmony.
The main motivation that prompted Thoreau to write the essay was founded on his direct protest against taxation. It was also an indirect protest against slavery, whereby the government condoned activities that supported the Mexican-American war.
