Body modification among women has existed throughout history, where women alter their physical appearances in practices such as tattooing, piercing, and color addition. Throughout history, women wore corsets to make their waists appear smaller. In China, foot binding was a common practice for centuries for women and girls. It involved breaking all toes, excluding the big toe, and putting a tight wrap so they could not grow back (Nienaber, 2018). They believed that foot binding made them more attractive, and they could subsequently find a husband. Tattooing was also practiced throughout history, similarly like it’s done today. Tattoos were done so women could fit into a particular group (Faulkner & Bailey, 2018). Scarification was also common, especially among African communities where women made small cuts on the skin to form words or symbols.
