What do you think are some of Paine's most important arguments?
Paine`s most important arguments are independence from colonial powers, a democratically representative form of government, and that government is a necessary evil, having originated from sin. In saying thus, the importance of other themes such as states of nature and the imperativeness of Britain`s oppression are not understated, but are not considered only because they are in some way or the other a part of the three broad categories mentioned here.
When looking at the first argument, independence from colonial powers at his time of writing the document, according to Paine, was an opportune moment as America was small and could be relatively easily united on one front in trying to get rid of the foreign powers in their land. As far as his second argument is concerned, which regards the selection of a King and a hereditary form of government as originating in sin, against the wishes of God, he argues that lawmaking is relevant only when people themselves are involved in the process while a monarchy does not allow such a system to exist. Lastly, government is taken as a necessary evil, the purpose of which is to protect the society from its own vices, and in being this guardian, it in itself is a necessary evil that needs to prevail in order to lend a form of order to society.
