Introduction
The Trail of Tears marks one of the darkest chapters in the history of the United States. The event involved the Eastern Woodlands Indians who were forced to settle in the west of the Mississippi River during the 1830s (Ehle, 2011). The population of these Native Americans was about 100,000 (Basso, 2016). They lived in different cultural factions, referred to as nations by historians, namely Cherokee, Seminole, Chocktaw, Chickasaw, and Creek. The lands owned in Georgia were valuable due to the gold mines and the land speculators developed a special interest in owning them. They used the U.S Congress to pass the Indian Removal Act in 1830 to allow states to control the lands. The act prompted the natives to pursue various means to advocate for their autonomy. However, their efforts did not yield results since they were moved under duress and marched westwards. About a quarter of 20,000 Cherokees perished while in transit to the foreign land (Minges, 2001). This paper seeks to argue that the Indian Removal Act played a critical part in triggering the trail of tears and more importantly, the struggle for autonomy by the Cherokee Natives. Besides establishing the numerous ways through which the act contributed to the struggle, the paper will evaluate the course of the historical event and find out how the events preceding the Indian Removal Act led to the trail of tears.
Underlying Factors that Led to Trail of Tears
The factors that stimulated the trail of tears were mainly attributed to the unofficial reasons used by the federal government to legislate the Indian Removal Act. Firstly, Basso (2016) observed that the U.S was growing fast to become an industrialized nation in the early 1800s. The cotton industry and the building of railroad systems demanded large portions of land. In this respect, the citizens began questioning its government why some native tribes still owned large parcels of land which could be useful for industries. President Andrew Jackson was also concerned about the common Indian raids in his plantations and, therefore, had a negative perception of the Native tribes. To most Americans, the Indians were savages. In this respect, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in response to the citizens' concerns.
In 1819, an English botanist known as Thomas Nuttall toured the Arkansas lands and reported back what he had observed (Basso, 2016). He painted the territory as a productive and fertile environment that could support agriculture. The findings inspired the interests of the English land speculators. The arrival of the Europeans in the regions occupied by the Natives triggered conflicts (Basso, 2016). The Europeans' efforts to accelerate their movement westward were hindered by the Native tribes which held firm to their lands. Although some tribes signed treaties to prevent the escalation of conflicts, they still expressed their interest to retain their autonomy.
The pressures on the Cherokee, Chickasaw, and Chocktaw Nations culminated in 1830 when the Congress made an ultimate decision through the Indian Removal Act to forcefully evacuate the natives to the Indian Territory (Kidwell, 2009). There is no d...
