The reading gives a discussion on Sōseki’s visit to the Tower of London. The character wrote his encounter at the tower right from the beginning of the journey. He describes the events at the place and his reactions to the impact after going back home. The description reveals that Sōseki did not get one of the best experiences during the visit. Instead, his expectations might have been turned down. It occurs that anyone visiting a place for the first time and especially a famous area must have specific anticipations. The expectations indulge anxiety on what could happen at the location. In this case, Sōseki’s picturing of the tower could have been wrong considering the unfolding of events after the visit. Sōseki would never want to revisit the tower. This argument is proven by his statement during the narration about the tower, ‘“The Tower,” I think, is something to see just once.’ One wonders what would have happened to push him to make such a claim. Did Sōseki experience anything terrible at the tower? Could he have been attacked? Or what did the tower look like to him? Sōseki must have been pushed by a strong force to write about the visit and also state that the tower is not something to see more than once.
