The current U.S constitutions and the pioneering Articles of Confederation share commonalities and differences. The different political viewpoints and time inform the contrasts and common features between these constitutions. It is from the difference in the epoch of time, existing circumstance and variant viewpoints that under the core comparisons and contrast between the Articles of Confederation and the U.S constitution.
Constitution reflects a collection of principles, regulations, and rules, which both the government and the people are obliged to follow. Understanding of the U.S system of governance and administration is a critical step in unraveling the tenets of constitutionalism in the U.S. The U.S is comprised of three levels of government, which include local, state, and national. The local governments enact laws for cities, counties and towns. The state authorities make laws that govern the whole state while the national or federal government makes laws for the entire country. The U.S constitution presents a basic law that establishes the federal system of governance in the US. The first U.S Constitution was called the Article of Confederation, which was written after 13 North American colonies proclaimed their independence from Great Britain, and such a constitution became effective in 1781 (Way, 2015). These colonies, which come under the Articles of Confederation and perpetual Union, included New Hampshire, Massachusetts-bay Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. The Articles of Confederation were used between 1781 to 1787 (Ferrino,2011). It established a confederation firm league of friendship among 13 states: this was a form of government at that time. The government was a bicameral Congress with executive and legislative responsibilities combined in Congress.
The constitution was ratified in 1789 and heralded a new phase in the American way of life regarding governance and administration (Vile, 2015). It facilitated the formation of the federal government. The constitution commenced a phase where the federal government shared powers with state governments. It provided for the three branches of government, including executive, legislature, and judiciary. In both constitutions, the nation is recognized as the United States of America.
The articles of Confederation and the constitution are two U.S critical documents that define the American Revolution. However, the two constitutions depict variations. First, the Articles of Confederation distributed power amongst the states, but the constitution dispersed power amongst the subordinates, but the ultimate power is bestowed in the central authority, which is the national government. Second, the article of Confederation had no bicameral parliament like the constitution. The Articles of Confederation had only a single chamber parliament.
