When Walter Runciman, the officially appointed mediator of the British government, arrived in Prague on August 3, 1938 he addressed the large crowd gathered at the train station with the following remarks: "I am the friend of all and the enemy of none. I have learned that permanent peace and tranquility can be secured only on a basis of mutual consent. There is much to be said for the exercise of patience." Does it seem from his statement that Runciman was likely to continue along the same path as Chamberlain, or was it possible that Runciman would be his own man in the negotiations that were about to take place--negotiations that would decide the fate of Czechoslovakia?

This British mediator came to Prague, Czechoslovakia and participated in a number of conferences along with the German leaders. He aimed to create peace and harmony everywhere in collaboration with other officials. Walter once addressed the crowd gathered at a train station where he tried to clarify his point of view.
