What Caused the Pueblo Revolt Of 1680 by David Weber and others?
There are complex issues that resulted in the Pueblo revolt of 1980 where the Pueblo Indians rallied against the Spanish in the American Southwest, before the Spaniards reestablished control over the region twelve years later. The Spanish conquered the Southwest over time and spread Catholicism and the colonizers did not adapt the Indian culture, but the Pueblans had to adapt. The Pueblo Revolt of 1680 was the climax of the simmering tension between the indigenous Pueblo Indians and the Spanish colonizers. The chapter highlights cultural conflicts as expressed through religion as one that increased tension, but does not elaborate on oral evidence among the Pueblo people. Cultural conflicts and especially religious beliefs and practices were one of the main causes of the Pueblo revolt of 1680, as eh Spanish repressed and restricted religious and cultural practices.
Bowden (21) as stated by Weber utilized anthropological ideas to distinguish the Spanish and Pueblo Indian societies prior to the 1680 revolt. As the Spanish conquered New Mexico and Arizona, they did not need to adapt to the way of life of the indigenous people and when first introducing church missions care was exercised to appear accommodative. Religion was significant for both the Pueblo and Spanish culture that they had their unique religious practices and symbols (Bowden 24). The Spaniards exerted pressure on the Pueblo people to change some of their ways, and the Franciscan missionaries were successful in spreading Christianity when they dealt with the village elders. Weber (25) highlighted that increased restriction on Indian religious practices in the 1670s increased tension and conflict.
