Poppies and Remembrance
Basham gives a feminist analysis of how remembering and forgetting were significant emotional practices in war and violent events involving the British Military. Wars have always involved women since the beginning of time. However, the patriarchal British society never allowed women to get the recognition they get. Aside from women, people of color were also discriminated against by the British community. Unlike women, people of color were considered insignificant and their worth in war could not be quantified. Basham (2016, 887) states that women were looked down upon despite their effort to participate in warfare and men always thought they played greater roles. With such sentiments and opinions in the minds of the British community, negative feelings were implanted and these greatly affected the coherence of the British. Emotions run high as the minority groups sought to have their piece and place in society. Eventually, the emotions accompanying gender and racial mourning were outweighed by the Royal British Legion’s Annual Poppy Appeal among the British whereby the affected communities forget the violence and the biased actions revealed during the war, allowing them to remember the military sacrifice involving every soldier’s participation.

How could the British women support the military when their fellow ladies are dying in war, and their effort is not recognized? How could the black community get involved emotionally with the activities when their men and women are disvalued throughout their attempt to fight for the British community? The failure of success in war activities may not depend on the fighting forces, but the emotional feeling and relationship from the people looking upon the militant group for security. Basham (2016, 883) claims that “In the UK that emotional energy relies on the drawing of racial and gendered boundaries." Although the people in the country know and understand they have differences in gender and race, their emotional desire to succeed in warfare conquers the variations, resulting in equality and the incitation towards winning as a country and not as different distinctions of people. However, the Poppy Appeals yields confusion since the community does not know what they have to remember or forget, due to the gender and racial geopolitics in basis because the celebration should reveal the value of polity that has been altered through the perpetuation of the weak communities in the military.
According to Iles (2008, 201), Flanders Poppy is the sign of commemoration of the departed during war activities at both national and local levels in a country. The poppies represent remembrance of the dead and the hope for a peaceful future that does not involve war activities or rather more deaths among the military. However, any country would hope for peace instead of warfare regardless of reporting zero effects at the end of the activity. The significance of the poppy is based on respect for the...
