Discuss the concept of credibility. What is it? Why is it especially important in persuasive speeches? How can you establish credibility in the eyes of your audience? What behaviors should you avoid because they might detract from your credibility?
Define “credibility” and explain why it’s important for a speaker to have credibility with the audience. Then select a specific topic and a specific audience. Explain how you would establish your own credibility as a speaker if you were presenting a speech about that topic to that audience.

Persuasion can be defined as an attempt to influence the belief, attitude, intention, motivation or behavior of a person. From a business point of view, persuasion is the process of changing the behavior of an employee toward an object, idea, event or another employee. Tools like written materials, spoken words and visuals are used to persuade someone to do something or to avoid something. On the other hand, manipulation is a skillful manner of changing the perception or behavior of others. In order to manipulate someone, deceptive, underhanded and abusive tactics are widely used (Sorlin, 2016). Persuasion is far different from manipulation, as in the latter, forced tactics are used and this can lead people to develop negativity. Thirdly, coercion is the practice of forcing someone to act in an involuntary way. Usually, people are forced with the use of power or are threatened to do something, and this is what we call coercion. Some of the most common forms of coercion are torture, threat, blackmailing, and extortion. For instance, a bully requiring lunch or money from a student can be regarded as a form of coercion. The two key elements that make persuasion more ethical than coercion and manipulation are rational judgment and non-deceptive way of making a decision. The behavior of other people is not changed forcefully in persuasion, while in coercion and manipulation, the forced behavior is always encouraged and this can cause problems for everyone. In my case, I have always loved the idea of motivating my employees to work hard by offering them weekly bonuses. I do not like manipulating them through false means. I strongly believe that we give rise to negative behaviors or attitudes when we force or threaten others to do something. If we want them to complete a project, then persuasion is a good idea and is ethical as it involves the use of polite words.
The concept of credibility is applicable where the ability of a person has to be judged. In essays or papers, credibility comes when arguments or opinions are supported by real-life or historical, authentic examples (Johnson, 2014). It should be noticed that in a persuasive speech, one has to convince the audience to do something or to believe something, and without credible sources, it may not be possible for them to bring any value to the speech. If I have to deliver a speech on childhood obesity and my target audience is parents who remain concerned about the weight and lazy lifestyles of their children, then I will establish credibility in the eyes of the audience by determining whether the author who is being credited is worth this credit or not. I would give logical examples and might opt for the rational approach to convey my message clearly. Not only this but also I would choose a topic that seems to be easy for me, as I do not want to deliver a speech on a difficult topic. For instance, I would utilize different means to support my arguments on childhood obesity and to convince the target audience that they should urge their children to live an active life.
