Customs and traditions are quite essential within a group and can help to bring cohesion and togetherness. In a country’s army, peaceful co-existence and cohesion are two important ingredients of having a powerful army. Therefore, it is in the interest of the armed forces to encourage customs and traditions which seem to foster cohesion.
In the Canadian Armed Forces, there are several customs and traditions which are original and borrowed but whose essence breeds cohesion. One such custom involves the setting of the table for the fallen soldiers. Every army prepares itself for the inevitable which is incurring losses or losing some of its believed. This is a reality that everyone who decides to join the army grapples with. This fact brings people closer because it is one thing that unites them. However, it is the respect that an individual is given and sadness of their absence that fosters cohesion because no one wants to see a table set for their friend or for any other person in the army.
The army is a union of brotherhood and one that not only seeks to protect a country and its citizens but one where every person seeks to protect the person fighting beside them. This idea helps to foster brotherhood and also helps to strengthen the bond between the members. A table set for a fallen soldier is a reminder that there will always be people who are ready to interfere with this bond and brotherhood.
