Liberty Challenge: Slavery
The signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783 was the advent of liberty challenge. At the time, American citizens rid themselves from the British rule and got their constitutional republic. Many people thought that it was the time for freedom to reign. Most American leaders and philosophers such as Adam Smith and John Locke proposed a need for individual worth with existence of inalienable rights, peace, and cooperation of a person's happiness (Lloyd, 2017). Thus, the American citizens anticipated equity and other fundamental achievements. However, for a very long time, American citizens never realized the much-anticipated freedom and liberty as classical liberalism took much of the political, economic and social arena. Instead, the leadership ventured on discrimination with much support of centralized planning, egalitarianism and much slavery instead of individual liberty, personal responsibility, natural law and free institution (Lloyd, 2017). Both the north and the south citizens were never in positive association hence the compromise brought a temporary political balance as well as revitalizing the union and peace. However, the outcome of the 1850 agreement led to the strengthening of the southern laws on the fugitive slaves, the prohibition of the slave trade in Washington DC and the north gaining California which was a free state. Besides, Texas lost is a territory with a compensation of $ 10 million for the debts (Smith, 2017).
Separately, the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 became instrumental due to the pressure by settlers and entrepreneurs who wanted to move to Nebraska. However, people could not move to the area since they could not hold a legal claim on the land. Therefore, the Southern Congress permitted the Nebraska territory because the slaves could go to the northern land of Missouri. Consequently, the Kansas-Nebraska Act led to d...
