On 6th September 1860, in Cedarville, Illinois, Jane Addams was born. Her father was a local politician who served 16 years as a senator and a miller. Jane studied at Rockford Female Seminary and Rockford College for Women. She was a reformer, administrator, peacemaker, settlement activist, and social worker. Jane did not shy away from standing up and representing females who at the time were expected to stay at home and take care of their husbands and look after their children. She portrayed the plights of women in the United States of America (USA). In particular, Jane was the first female in the USA to be awarded an honorary master’s degree of art from the University of Yale in 1910 (Michals, 2017). She gave speeches to young women on how to save money, look after their families, nurse the sick, take care of their children, and listened to people with mental problems.
Jane’s contributions to the USA did not go unnoticed. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931. She also co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and Chicago’s Hull House, which became one of the most prominent house settlements. Jane wa...
