Relationship between Impressionism and Nature
Impressionism is one of the most radical art movements that started in the 1800s. It was a revolutionary art that addressed the conceptual and abstract thought that followed in the next years. Unlike the old classical movements, impressionists aspired to create lovely and charming art that excluded darkness and instead chose to use color and brightness in their paintings. The appeal that color brought to Impressionism and the depiction of light in the paintings meant that the subject matter of art no longer needed to be concealed. The revelation of a painting's subject matter enabled viewers to recognize and relate to the message behind the art. Impressionists resisted the classical subject matter and moved toward modernity through creation of artworks that depicted the real world and the environment in which they existed. Therefore, Impressionism advocated for the depiction of nature and impressionist exercised Plein air, or painting outside and capturing landscapes and real-life moments.
The introduction of Plein air painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, and Alfred Sisley marked the beginning of Impressionism in the 1860s (Olson, 2018). The movement got a boost from an American painter known as John Rand who worked as a painter in London. Although he did not become a preeminent painter during the introduction of Impressionism, he made a significant contribution that revolutionized the impressionism movement. In 1841, he created a device that made pre-mixed paint for painters and a painting tube that allowed painters to paint nature, including rivers, cities, and anything that inspired them in the environment. The technique introduced by Rand enabled the modern painters of that era to move toward impressionism art and move from painting indoors to painting outside, sometimes as a group on painters. When painting in nature, painters would share ideas and discuss what inspired their art, sometimes painting different artworks from a similar landscape.
Edouard Manet is one of the most famous impressionists. He was a realist painter who advocated for the close friendship between impressionist painters and the strengthening of the impressionism movement. Manet's techniques were unique and attractive, and therefore, a large number of impressionists embraced the method of modernity and spontaneity as the brush strokes (Brodskaïa, 2018). His use of lighting and color also made a stout connection with nature, as the light was a critical aspect of the environment. Before the official launch of the impressionism movement, the classical movement strongly rejected impressionist's paintings to a pint that the press ones insulted Manet's picture which was known as Impression, Sunrise. Critics in the media regarded the artwork as unfinished with some comparing it to a wallpaper. It is from the insults that the term impressionism got coined, referring to Manet's painting that got rejected by classicists and the media. The transition from classical to impressionism movement was a difficult one since most traditional artists had not accepted the idea of suing nature and depicting ...
