The Importance of Reconstruction in the Development of the U.S. and How it has Shaped the U.S. Today Reconstruction is famed as the period that shaped the United States of America into its present status. It started the wheels of redefining this nation and propelled it into a path of positivity from a past that was replete with chaos and differences. This period contributes to the discourse that America has experienced various and complicated political upheavals that have significantly influenced the identity of its people and the nation. Different individuals have expressed divisive opinions, which later merged to enable the country to move past the various movements. Reconstruction marks one of these eras where the country was embroiled in conflicting objectives by different facets, each championing its rights. Eventually, the successes and failures of Reconstruction established this movement as a popular one because its effects were far-reaching into contemporary times, making it an important determinant of the fate of the modern nation. Evidence indicates that Reconstruction was an era that began immediately after the termination of the civil war in 1865 and lasted several years until 1877. Its primary goal was to mend the broken nation’s political, social, and economic aspects. According to Du Bois (1935), its primary objective was to reunite the states in the South with the union and ensure that they started to participate in the political affairs of a united America. Moreover, Reconstruction projected to harmonize the rights of everyone by extending fundamental ones to the African Americans who were no longer slaves to integrate them into the society. These goals aimed to foster modern relationships between the masters and former slaves in a fully running American nation. However, it was one of the most challenging tasks due to the animosity between the blacks and the whites. The disjointed states, dwindling economy, and free slaves after the 1865 13^th Amendments prompted diverse leaders, including Abraham Lincoln, to present various reconstruction plans to solve the ongoing challenges post-civil war. Thus, the Reconstruction focused on ushering in a new era for the American nation. Although different groups or coalitions played a significant part in making Reconstruction a reality, the radical Republicans were the primary coalition force that led this movement. Bradley (2015) indicates that this group was led by the main objectives of punishing the South since the members felt that they were the primary cause of the Civil War and extending political and economic assistance to the freed slaves.
