In the aftermath of the Civil War, the United States attempted to right the wrongs of slavery as well as the consequences of its political, social, and economic legacies, as well as to resolve the problems resulting from the reinstatement of the states that had left the Union at the start of the civil war. By the late 1870s, all seceded States had formulated legislation, recognized the 13th, 14th, and 15th constitutional Amendments, and publicly declared their allegiance to the United States.
