How did Americans think about land and landscape during the antebellum era? What did these symbolize?
Landscape in the antebellum era (period around the American Civil War, 1861-1865) can denote humans' role in the landscape (Brophy, 2009). Humans appear as hunters, settlers, and travelers at such a time. This period was marked by human structures such as rude paths, railroads, cabins, mills, bridges, and canals (Brophy, 2009). The imagery portrayed by these structures represents property doctrine developments, mainly associated with adverse possession, mistaken improvers, and nuisance. Technological advances and social movements marked the period and had a profound impact on the course of American history, including westward expansion, cotton plantation farming, and abolition of slavery. These changes were captured in landscape art that symbolized renewed America’s hope and fresh start and conflicts and new law and economic developments.
