The Action Logic and Traits of a True Leader
Are there any specific qualities for a leader to be honored as one of the greatest in history?
38576252921000Peng Dehuai is well known in Chinese communist history, as well as China’s minister of national defense from 1954 to 1959 (Dehuai, 2001). He was a military commander that led many wars to victory during the time of local civil wars, then under the command of Mao Zedong, before becoming one with the military force of the Chinese Communist Party.
The Achiever

He is action and goal-oriented making sure that his strategic goals are met.
As an achiever, he can use the manpower wisely by a careful delegation of tasks and responsibilities (Rooke & Torbert, 2005). He is a leader that is loved by his troops because of his goals and vision, and the way he wins battles. Peng Dehuai also exhibits critical thinking about the different military/political moves that the communist group makes, which is important due to the long-term effects that each decision may entail. Another important aspect of the leadership of Peng Dehuai that was seen when he was China’s Minister of Defense, is his drive to formulate new strategies and innovation for their military team despite the Communists winning many battles with their current ways.
Peng Dehuai is good at implementing strategies and this was tested in a lot of events when he was a senior commander under Mao Zedong and was part of the historical Long March, where he was honored as “The Hero of Long March” (Dehuai, 2001).
He is capable of managing his team to achieve the set goals such as when he was also second in the hierarchy of the Communist military force during the Sino-Japanese war and a leader in Chinese military forces during the Korean war. During his term as China’s minister of defense and the army’s supreme commander, he led 12,000 soldiers in the battle at Dachen Islands, which was the base of the Nationalist leader, Chiang Kai Shek. His good leadership during these events were seen to be autocratic during urgent situations in battle, and this is appropriate to provide clear expectations and direction to the whole troop.
The Strategist
The leadership of Peng Dehuai was seen on numerous occasions both during battles and in the community. Although action logic types may differ depending on the individual’s own experiences and growth, the most fitting type of action logic for the great commander is a strategist.
The strategists are transformational leaders.
They are defined as capable of generating transformation in himself, his team, and the community (Kotter 2009). A leader with this type of action logic also considers short and long-term goals when exercising vulnerability, vigilance, and mutual inquiry, as seen with how effective Peng Dehuai is with planning and execution. Social change is a vision that he wants as a leader, and he is hands-on and involved in the wh...
