Have you ever wondered how the Great Wall of China was built in ancient times without the use of modern technology or machinery? They built that structure entirely by using their own two hands. The Egyptian population was insufficient to provide the necessary amount of labor to build that enormous structure, so they used enslaved people to meet their labor demands. Some people do so voluntarily because they have no other option, while others are criminals who have been ordered to labor at the Great Wall of China's construction site ("Ancient China: The Great Wall").
Slavery has a long history in our society; it symbolized poverty and financial ruin in the ancient world. Enslaved people in the old world would probably choose to be enslaved than be homeless because their masters would provide them with food and shelter if they served as enslaved people for them. When it came to slavery, racism was not as prevalent as it is today. Anyone who can perform physical labor can work as an enslaved person for anyone.
Moving forward to the near future, slavery is still prevalent in North America and strongly correlates with racism. People of color are treated as enslaved since they differ from white people's appearance (The American Yawp, n.d.). Due to North America's rapid economic growth, many investors and individuals now have access to a larger workforce at lower labor costs. Slavery flourished and gained notoriety throughout the world—but especially in America, one of the nations undergoing an industrial revolution—because of this quest for cheap labor.
Enslaved Africans were transported to the United States as a cheap labor supply and became a substantial source of economic and political capital in the country's political economy. Africans in slavery were viewed as commodities—property—by the law. They were frequently used individually and collectively as collateral in many different types of business transactions. Due to the significant role enslaved people played in the nation's economic development, the decision to abolish slavery at the height of the practice is likely to have a devastating effect on the continent's continued development, leading to the likelihood that African people's rights are no longer recognized.
