Introduction
The first batch of European explorers reached the northern American region around 1500. For the Europeans, North America was an entirely new region, with many animals and plants to discover. In the exploration, they encountered the American Indians, and according to them, American Indians had a fascinating way of life never encountered by the Europeans. According to archaeological records, American Indians had lived in North America for over a century. European exploration opened up the North American region and consequently impacted the lives of American natives.
Motives behind European exploration
While the European explorers were motivated by a desire to increase their colonial power, their American exploration was also part of an initiative to discover the northwest trade passage. Successful expansion to the new world increased the power of the British empire. More so, exploration opened up new opportunities to increase their wealth, find food, acquire more spices, and spread Christianity (Redmond & Gittelsohn, 2019). Ideally, it was much easier to produce raw materials using newly established colonies and transported to Britain for processing and brought back where it could be sold at higher prices to the colonies. Exploration typically offered great opportunities to the Europeans but negatively impacted the native Americans.
