The Byzantine Empire is also known as the Eastern Roman Empire, and it was formed in the 300s after the split of Rome. Its capital city was Constantinople, which is currently known as Istanbul. The empire survived various fragmentation and especially the fall of the western Roman empire, and lasted until 1953. Before its fall, it was most powerful in terms of culture, economy, and military force in Europe. For many centuries the economy of the byzantine empire was the most performing in Europe. The empire served as a terminus due to the great silk road that connected multiple areas. The Byzantine economy was, therefore, flourishing due to improved trade networks with the west.
